STA Level 2 Award in Open Water Safety


The STA Open Water Safety qualification is to assist learners who works around open water with the basic knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure a safe swimming session.

Qualification Objectives

The STA Level 2 Award in Open Water Safety (OWS) is designed to train learners in rescue, CPR techniques and first aid competencies in order to act as safety cover in an open water environment for competent swimmers.

Target Learners

Anyone over the age of 16 years old at the point of the assessment who may assist with the outdoor safety provision of an open water swimming venue.


The STA Open Water Safety Award is a stand alone course. Learners may progress onto swimming teaching or open water swimming coaching.

This course is designed to support open water coaches and progression may be made through coaching qualifications.
